What Is Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching?

Nutrition health coaching

Integrative nutrition combines traditional nutrition guidelines and a functional medicine strategy to nutrition, which takes an individualised approach to eating and lifestyle choices. It goes further than basic dietary guidelines to empower individuals to take control of their food choices and educate themselves about the impact of these on their body, which often leads them on a journey to discovering root causes for illnesses and health challenges. In contrast to other nutritional approaches we look further afield than just what's on the plate when looking at the health of individuals. In health coaching this is called primary food, there are 12 areas including environment, career, relationships, finances, education and physical health. These insights are combined with secondary food; our nutrition, to give a holistic overview of the individuals lifestyle and consequential state of health.

The role of a health coach is to work with clients to set and achieve health goals by facilitating them to strengthen their skills, knowledge and intuition. As opposed to prescribing diet plans, diagnosing or medicating conditions. As a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) my focus is on bio-individuality, the idea that every client’s needs are unique to them as no human body is the exact same. When working with clients I help them to discover what a healthy and happy lifestyle looks like, what it is they need mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually to achieve this.

In a society where the National Health Service is on the brink of collapse and can no longer sustain it’s demand, Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches are bridging the ever growing gap between practionies and clients. The health coach vocation is a revoluntionary step towards a new a type of healthcare system rooted in prevention and upskilling patients to care more effectively for their health. Whilst an appointment with your local GP only lasts 10 minutes, a health coaching session is 60 minutes weekly or bi-weekly allowing in depth conversations and relationship building between client and coach.

In recent years there has been a significant shift in the western medicine with an acknowledgement and acceptance that there is a place in the medical community for health coaches. As medical professionals recognise the impact of nutrition, exercise, stress, home environment and other lifestyle factors. Patients have began to work inconjuction with Health Coaches as part of a long term patient care strategy.
